Time For the New Year

A list of resolutions.

  1. Don’t read comment threads anymore
I’ve tried this one before with mixed results. Something gets me back to them eventually. I watch a Youtube video and scroll down. There’s no need to scroll down. STAY ABOVE THE GODDAM FOLD.
  2. No eating mammals or fowl
Eggs are fine. They’re failed fowl. And I love eggs and could never give them up. This isn’t a moral thing or a health thing, I’m just tired of eating meat all the time.
  3. NO MORE SOCIAL NETWORKING
This is a big one. What does it mean? It means I uninstall TweetDeck on all the machines I use. It means I stop going to Facebook and Twitter and LinkedIn period. The Facebook app gets deleted from my iPhone. I turn off email notifications from those sites. I’m still available through email and IM and on my Google groups and mailing lists. The social networking scene is just a mess and I need to carve it out of my day-to-day like a malignant tumor. When I want the world to know things, I’ll post them here on Illuminerdi. I can focus on the other domains I own and re-purpose them appropriately. My networking accounts will remain open, just unmaintained.
  4. Get back to the novel. Get it done.
Nothing difficult. I know where it needs to go. I just have to sit down with it and make it my bitch again.
  5. Write a five song demo, record it, release it.
This also shouldn’t be difficult. I’ve got lots of ideas down on Audioboo (which is social networking, so I will drop that as well, thank you res#3), and I just need to sit down and learn all the tools I now have at my disposal.
  6. Write at least five short stories
Make them good. Get them published.
  7. Write more open code
Release more code to the community. Contribute on more projects.
  8. Actually, learn more languages
I really want to learn C so that I have a solid ‘core’ language. Then I’m thinking picking up more Obj-C (not just iPhone stuff). Maybe Erlang? Although my experiments with WebSockets and Ruby earlier today might remove the need for that – thanks EventMachine!
  9. Go to Europe
Germany is preferred. Remember enough of the language to not be THAT American.

I’ve been dropping versions of the above on Twitter over the course of today as I’ve thought them up. As I write this I’m going through my accounts and turning off notifications and preparing to say my final goodbyes. If you’re really interested in following along with my activities, check back here, or subscribe to the site through its RSS feed. I think I’m going to ‘rediscover’ RSS over the next month so that I can keep up with people whom I would normally just follow on Twitter. If you need to email or IM, and I’m okay with that, then you probably already know how to get in touch with me that way.

This is Joshua Clingenpeel, signing out of the constant datastream. I’m sure I’ll be back, but hopefully not before 2011.

Thanks for the Absinthe. I like the drink we had in Leavonworth better. Was that a Rusty Nail?

  2. Joshua says

That was a Rusty Nail. Equal parts Drambuie and Scotch over ice in a rocks glass. I usually do one measure of each. It’s a nice, warming drink.
